Kevin Johnson and Steve Nash were not just ships passing in the night. For
two years in the late 1990s, the point guards were Suns teammates, passing to
help win games.

KJ和Nash不單只是傳球者，90年代末期這對控衛更是隊友一同幫助太陽贏球。

Few could have predicted that Nash would one day break Johnson's Suns record
for career assists (6,518). Nash was 12 behind Johnson heading into Saturday
night's game against Memphis..

Nash played sparingly as a rookie and remained a reserve the next year
because of Johnson and Jason Kidd.

Johnson saw big-time potential in Nash, a 1996 first-round pick with whom
Johnson shared his final full two seasons with the Suns.

"You're as good as anyone I've played against," Nash said Johnson told him at
the time. "You have to keep believing in yourself and keep working. You can
do all the things all the other great guards can do. You just have to keep
practicing, and one day you'll get the opportunity to show it."

Two Most Valuable Player awards and five assists titles (working on six)
later, Nash's passing fancy has proved transcendent. Nash is not just the
greatest passer in Suns history, he's sixth on the all-time NBA list after
the surreal experience of passing his childhood hero, Isiah Thomas, and his
early mentor, Gary Payton, last season. Despite all his talent, Nash is not
sure where he would be without those words from Johnson.

level," Nash said. "I was never the chosen one. It was great that he
(Johnson) was generous enough to offer that confidence and wisdom."

It was not until Nash's fifth NBA season that he even averaged seven assists
per game, but he has been named an All-Star seven times since then. Nash
never had a season with a double-digit assist average until he returned to
Phoenix in 2004. He has averaged 10 or more assists every season since,
except during the '08-09 campaign when he averaged 9.7 assists.

Nash and Johnson share the top of the franchise assist leader board, but
their playing styles did not have the same resemblance beyond floor vision
and being a beloved figure in the city.

Johnson was a scoring point guard. He never won an assist title, although his
12.2 assists per game in 1988-89 were more than Nash's best season.

"Passing was less of what he was brought here to do, as much as he was
supposed to lead us in scoring," said Mark West, Johnson's Suns teammate who

Nash, who turns 38 on Feb. 7,needs more games in a Suns uniform than Johnson
to break the record, mostly because of his reserve role in his first two
years in the league, when he tallied 400 of the assists. Johnson played 683
games with the Suns while Nash played his 700th game with Phoenix on Saturday
night.

Nash is amazed at Johnson's numbers. In Johnson's four consecutive
double-digit assist seasons, Johnson averaged 19.7 to 22.5 points.

"It was a great experience and opportunity for me to play with Kevin," Nash
said. "I got to learn watching him and playing against him in practice. He

The work ethic is a big reason for Nash's success, but his athleticism always
has been underrated. West said most athletes don't have close to the same
balance and functional strength that Nash possesses. Nash is an intellectual
player who sees how all the pieces fit together on the floor.

But beyond any drive, physical ability or intelligence, Nash needed to have
something else to be the player who keeps on giving. It is his off-court
personality to be benevolent and it was his introduction to sports predicated
on passing over scoring.

"Starting out in hockey and soccer, it was natural to me," Nash said. "It was
a personality and the way my mind works. It made sense to me to see
everything and try to pass to teammates and create extra opportunities to
them or try to trick the defense. That was always more fun for me than trying
to score 30 points."
