The Suns are a fantastic team with a halftime lead, winning nine of 10 times
this season.

The problem with getting that halftime lead has been keeping first-quarter
leads.

The latest mix of Suns reserves is having the same problem as past
combinations -- scoring in the second quarter. The Suns rank 25th in the NBA
in second-quarter scoring, averaging 22 points, and have failed to score 20
in the second quarter three times in the past week.

The Suns led 32-30 early in Thursday night's second quarter against Houston
before surrendering a 13-0 run with faults on both sides of the floor. The
second unit's inability to score unless there is a hot hand, usually Michael
Redd's lately, was shown when Suns reserves missed all but one of 10
consecutive first-half shots.

When the Suns starters re-enter, they are fighting the opponent's momentum
and confidence.

It is a new mix again now that Redd has been reincorporated into the rotation
and moved to the bench for the past three games. Redd scored 11 of the Suns'
13 bench points on Thursday and 14 of 22 bench points on Tuesday at Milwaukee.

"This is my first time playing significant minutes with that unit so we're
just learning each other and I'm learning to play with (point guard Sebastian

When the five Suns starters have been on the court this season, the Suns
outscore opponents by 47 points. The rest of the time, the Suns have been
outscored by 87 points. Largely, it is because the half-court offense comes
to a standstill when Nash is not on the floor.

"What we have to do is really focus on getting out of the half-court and
getting into up-tempo and pushing the limits defensively," Childress said.

On Thursday night, Gentry never went back to rookie power forward Markieff
Morris or center Robin Lopez in the second half, playing Channing Frye for
all of it and Marcin Gortat for all but 55 seconds of it.

"I just felt like we were a little more stable with that," Gentry said. "What
had happened in the second quarter, I didn't feel like we could risk that and
get down big in the fourth quarter."

In the fourth quarter, one usually begun by an all-reserve unit, the Suns
have not fared much better, scoring 15, 19 and a season-low 13 in the past
three fourth quarters. Even when the bench is good, it has been a mixed bag
of getting one good half, playing one side of the court well or riding one
hot performer.

不過似乎沒有比較好，上一場第四節13分是本季新低。

"That (bench consistency) is the only thing separating us from being able to
put together some wins," Gentry said.
