NEW YORK – The visiting locker room at Madison Square Garden was full of
explanations, excuses, self-criticisms and regrets on Sunday, as it has
been for every New York Knicks home game this season.

The Suns (7-11) have led after the first quarter five times in 18 games
and appeared no more determined to change that against New York (12-4).
The Knicks took a 21-6 lead in the first seven minutes of play after
the Suns starters made turnovers on four consecutive plays, giving
them seven on the game’s first 14 possessions.

The Suns gave up 13 unanswered points while not scoring for nearly five
minutes to trail 21-6. The Suns offense went to Michael Beasley to
start the game, as it often does, with shots on two of the first three trips.
But at the end of the 13-0 run, he missed a shot, had his dribble
stripped by Carmelo Anthony and threw the ball to the scorer’s table
when he lost grip on an intention to pass to Marcin Gortat under the basket.
Anthony had hit three of his first five shots against Beasley.

Beasley judiciously held his words beyond that, only saying he did not feel
good after playing less half the game for the sixth time this season.
It certainly was not him alone. He only made two of the 17 turnovers and
was not responsible for most of the 12 3-pointers New York made when the
Suns often scrambled to cover Tyson Chandler on pick-and-rolls.

who had his first double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) since Nov. 12.
“We didn’t enjoy being out there. It has to change.
Every team, at some point, has some type of swagger and, quite honestly,
we don’t have a swagger. Each one of us is frustrated.

The Suns’ rallies came and went like an ocean wave until they
entered the fourth quarter trailing by 17. Reserve point guard
Sebastian Telfair hit three shots for eight points, and the Suns closed
within six with 6:55 to go. But they only hung around in the vicinity
from there as Anthony finished the game to “M-V-P” chants.
He scored 34 points, 17 in each half, but was only 11 of 27 from
the field, making several difficult fadeaways against Tucker’s tough
defense. Knicks point guard Raymond Felton
hurt Phoenix more with 23 points, seven assists and
no turnovers.

Michael Beasley lost the ball out of bounds with nobody on him.
The New York City wake-up call did not come early enough,
making it another improbable climb all game.

Eighteen games in, even the offense has not clicked for Beasley.
Tucker has shown he can defend top scorers, staying with
Carmelo Anthony well and forcing him to make mostly difficult shots.
At 7-11, the Suns might be close to a time where they consider
living with Tucker’s offensive shortcomings to start solid on defense.
