Phoenix Suns seek substance over style

鳳凰城太陽隊尋求球風的轉變

Suns have a three-game winning streak and a new identity
as a defensive-minded franchise

太陽最近贏得三連勝，也建立全新的防守球風。

Go to the corner of Fearless and Desperate. That’s where
you’ll find Alvin Gentry at his best.

我們簡崔教練是位非常的勇敢且努力的教練。

The Suns’ head coach has shaken his starting lineup like
a snow globe. He has made Michael Beasley his go-to guy.
Go to the end of the bench, son. And at halftime of an
embarrassing performance against the Kings on Monday, Gentry
spared no feelings in a blistering locker-room assessment.

簡崔教練調動他的先發就跟搖動雪景球一樣大風吹，因為他把他的頭
號進攻選擇丟到板凳的深處。在對上國王球隊打了糟糕的上半場後，
簡崔教練雖然很火，但是他沒有表現出來。

“It was not good, not good at all,” Gentry said. “It
wasn’t anything I should’ve been saying during the
Christmas or holiday season. But I think it got the word across.”

他只說了這樣很不好!!!  因為我不應該在聖誕節前夕或假日前發飆，
但是我想他們有把我的話聽進去。

The Suns responded by pummeling the lowly Kings. After a
seven-game losing streak, they have now chiseled out three
consecutive victories, including an impressive lockdown effort
against the Grizzlies.

球員們也以好表現擊敗國王來回應教練的說法，在七連敗後他們打出三連
勝，包含了藉由精彩的防守表現幹掉灰熊。

In that span, they have played 10 quarters of very good defense.

這三連勝期間，他們有十節的時間展現出優秀的防守。

“I think our guys are starting to understand,” assistant coach
Dan Majerle said, “it not only takes technique, it takes a lot
of effort. You’re either going to play very hard or it’s not
going to be successful.”

助理教練丹馬莉表示我想球員們開始了解到防守不是只需要技巧更需要大量
的努力與拼勁，除非你打的夠拼，否則你不可能贏球。

Effort is a curious thing in the NBA, and the Suns aren’t the
first team to struggle with the concept. It’s a quality not
always on display in the NBA, especially in the first six months
of the season, and especially on defense. The reasons vary.

在NBA拼勁與努力是件奇妙的事，太陽不是第一支對此感到困惑的球隊。尤其
在開季的前六個月，努力與拼勁很難在場上被發現，特別是在防守端，而理

Unlike other sports, basketball is considered an art form and a
cultural expression. Style points matter. There is a premium on
looking cool, like you’re not trying all that hard.

There is also little glory to be found playing defense in the NBA.
It’s not like football, where defense is its own profession,
where violent hits are celebrated. It’s not like baseball, where
everyone can relate to a great catch.

在NBA主打防守極少會受到關注，他跟美式足球不同，美式足球的防守有其專業
的部分，在那暴力的動作是被鼓勵的；他跟棒球也不同，棒球裡面每個球員都
可能有精彩守備。

In the NBA, defense is not fun to play or watch. From an entertainment
standpoint, it’s considered a necessary evil. Miraculously, the
mindset changes dramatically when the playoffs arrive.

在NBA裡面防守一點都不有趣更沒有觀賞娛樂性，從娛樂的角度為準，這是必
要之惡。但是弔詭的是，這個心態在季後賽就會突然轉變。

All these forces work against a basketball coach. But just as
Gentry has made it clear that he’s going to play his guys —
the ones who give him the best effort and the best chance at
winning in the short term — he also understands this team will
have to grind to victory on defense.

而以上所有的事就是總教練們所會遇到的，但是簡崔教練很明確的表示他要他的
球員都需要拿出拼勁跟努力去贏得比賽，他也知道這支球隊必須要靠防守來贏球。

“That’s what we’re doing,” Gentry said. “Every single day, we
march down here in practice and we review it. We go over it. We
do it time and time again. We talk about rotations. We talk about
isolation. We talk about post play and how we’re going to defend it.

簡崔教練說那正是我們現在做的，每天我們來到這裡練習然後複習日復一日。
我們會討論防守的輪轉、一對一、低位單打以及我們如何去防守他。

“But confidence is a strange thing. Win a few games, and all of
a sudden, your guys are confident. They end up making plays that
went against you earlier in the season. I mean, four games ago, we
were missing point-blank layups.”

但是信心是一件奇怪的事，當你贏了幾場比賽，突然間所有球員都有了信心。
他們連進攻都跟賽季前段有所不同，我是說四場比賽以前，我們連簡單的上

Even in good times, this won’t be pretty. Generation New has been
weaned on high-scoring, unpredictable offense in Phoenix. After
a Steve Nash thrill ride that lasted nearly a decade, defensive
stands are a tough sell. They might not catch the audience’s fancy
or stem the tide of apathy that seems to be sweeping through US
Airways Center.

雖然在現在處於三連勝的狀態，但是看起來還不是很好。因為這批太陽隊新
世代的球員們已經拋去過往高得分跟不可預測的進攻方式。在老大過去接近
十年帶領的跑轟球風底下，防守很少被注意。所以現在他們可能沒辦法吸引
觀眾的目光或者在美航中心球場帶起一股旋風。

But I can support a team where Marcin Gortat is perfectly happy
rebounding and blocking shots; where Shannon Brown is the new go-to
guy; where Luis Scola is delivering impassioned postgame speeches;
where the team is playing with maximum effort on a nightly basis;
and Gentry is coaching just like he did when he first inherited
Terry Porter’s nightmare in 2009.

但是我願意支持這支球隊，因為鍋貼喜歡抓籃板送火鍋，因為香濃現在是球
隊的進攻首選，因為由阿伯負責賽後的談話，因為球隊每晚都盡全力的打好
比賽。而簡崔教練也跟二○○九年剛接替波特時一樣，指導著這支球隊。

That was when he first decided to coach fearlessly (i.e., benching
Amar’e Stoudemire and Jason Richardson), unconcerned with his job
security, bruised egos or politics.

那時候是他第一次決定要勇敢的作為一位教練(因為他把阿罵跟J-Rich擺在板
凳)，不去擔心他的飯碗保不保得住，也不管別人怎麼說。

That’s also when Gentry is at his best. And it’s the only way these
Suns are going to win.

那是簡崔教練最棒的地方，也是帶領太陽繼續贏下去的唯一方法。
