SAN DIEGO -- The on-field ceremony at PETCO Park had already ended on
Thursday when a voice from the seats behind home plate implored San Diego
general manager Kevin Towers to make sure pitcher Jake Peavy never leaves
the Padres.
"Give him a check, Kevin!" said one season-ticket holder who was on hand
for a ceremony that honored Peavy for unanimously winning the National
League Cy Young Award.
That very well could happen.
Peavy, 26, is under contract through the 2009 season but his agent, Barry
Axelrod, and the team have entered preliminary discussions about keeping
Peavy beyond 2009 with the only organization he's ever known.
"We're having ongoing dialog," Towers said. "I think that is the way that
Barry wants it, Jake wants it and we want it." .....
"I want to be a Padre," Peavy said. "I'm not afraid to say that. I'm proud
to be a Padre."
