Sir, what you posted here does not fully reflect the truth.
The honor degrees have nothing to do with "one year course in extention".
Also, the honor degrees do not necessarily require a honor thesis.
The requirements for receiving a honor differ from school to school.
Most schools provide honor degrees to students with high GPA.
Some schools may also have honor degrees which require students to
complete certain clusters of courses.
Some schools provide honor degrees to student who complete a thesis.
Few schools require students to complete all three above to receive
the honor degrees.

However, "one year course in extention" is never required.
Only students who can not complete the requirements for honor degrees
in regular schedule will stay more semesters.

In UK, most students in top universities will have a honor degree,
while in USA, only about 1/3 students in top universities will.
