Araki has dealt with a range of subjects, from plants and animals to cities, but his representations of the female body are indubitably the key to his success in Japan and in the West. In the latter context in particular, which has become highly sensitive to the representations of gender power relations, a photographic practice so clearly based on the commodification of the sexualized female body meets with an enthusiastic and largely uncritical reception.
