I think the normal coordinates you're talking about is what we choose as
a linearly independent set of more convenient variables
that decouple the diff. equation, so we can see more physics in it
for example, when analyzing a periodical wave,
you can either view it as a whole
or as a linear combination of sin waves with different frequencies
