For the wave propagating along z direction, most of the textbook describes

it in a complex form (time-independent) as

E(z)=E(0)exp(-jkz).

Here, k=2nπ/λ is the propagation constant and z is the distance. n and

λ are, respectively, refractive index and free-space wavelength.


Some texbooks, especially regarding topics of "thin-film," define β=kz

as phase thickness. Thus, the wave equation is expressed as

E(z)=E(0)exp(-jβ). Via introducing phase thickness, β, the wave propagation

matrix (usally very messy in mutil-layer) looks more clear and explicit.
