The Pirates this morning signed first baseman Adam LaRoche on
a one-year contract worth $7.05 million, thus avoiding salary arbitration.
He can make an additional $100,000 in performance bonuses.
The financial term actually was reached late last night,
according to a source.
That still leaves five players unsigned as the noon deadline to
exchange salary arbitration figures approaches.
LaRoche, 29, made $5 million last season while batting .270 with
25 home runs and 85 RBIs. This was his third and final year of arbitration
eligibility, and he can become a free agent after the coming season.
Only shortstop Jack Wilson, with a base salary of $7.25 million,
will make more on the Pirates' roster.
