Burning questions as Darko-mania continues to grow:

Q . They are talking about promoting Darko to the starting lineup in Orlando
already. Do you think the Pistons traded him too hastily, and do you think they
did it just to cut costs?

A . Listen, we can probably agree on a couple points.

Darko Milicic was not going to flourish here. Expectations were too high, and
there was already too much failure. Plus, the Wallaces and Antonio McDyess
aren't going anywhere anytime soon. He had to go, and his value this summer
would have been the same as it was last week. It was a good deal for the
Pistons (another first-round pick, probably in 2008, and some cap relief), and
it was good deal for Darko.

As to the Pistons taking the cheap way out and cutting him loose to save a
couple of luxury-tax dollars, that's not the case.

The Pistons are running a business, and it is their right to seek profit. But
if they were depleting valuable assets, and putting another championship run at
risk just to get under the threshold, criticism would be warranted.

That's not what happened. They unloaded a couple spare parts. In so doing, they
put themselves in position to maintain enough financial flexibility to keep
this starting five intact for perhaps the next four years, and to surround it
with capable support players (the likes of Maurice Evans and Carlos Delfino).

A . We should find out today. He was expected to clear waivers, but the Pistons
aren't the only team interested. Utah and Miami expressed interest.

Don't look at this as the piece that's going to put the Pistons over the top or
