DENVER -- Mini-streams of sweat kept flicking off Tony Delk's head, sort of
like the rhythmic swishing of jump shots he made during 3-on-3 drills Thursday
at the University of Denver's Ritchie Center.

It was a good first day of practice for the newest Detroit Piston, who might
get an opportunity to play right away. Head coach Flip Saunders indicated on
Thursday that Delk would be on the active roster for tonight's game against
Seattle.

The 32-year-old Delk, who signed with Detroit on Wednesday after being waived
by the Atlanta Hawks last week, understands it'll take time before he plays at
the level he's used to.

"It's a different kind of intensity when you're in real games," Delk said. "

Despite having played in just one game this season, Delk was on the Hawks'
active roster for the past couple of weeks. Even before that, he spent as much
time as possible working on his conditioning. As the youngest of 10 children,
Delk learned at an early age the importance of being ready for whatever came
his way.

Delk's five brothers constantly pushed him to excel on and off the court. They
also taught him the importance of perseverance, which has helped him deal with
being traded several times in recent years.

His story is similar to that of a lot of his new teammates, which is why they
believe his transition to the Pistons will be smooth.

"He's one of us," said center Ben Wallace. "He's been one of those guys who had
to fight to get where he's at. He's had a couple of teams that gave up on him,
traded him. Hopefully, he can just come in here and just relax and play his
game. That's all we ask; that's all we do."

The Pistons were all smiles during Thursday's practice, not exactly what you
might expect coming off a loss. To them, Wednesday's 98-87 loss at Denver was "
just one of those games."

Said Saunders: "Our strength is how hard we play and the energy we play with.

Alex Acker left Denver Thursday morning to join fellow rookie Amir Johnson at
the Pistons' Developmental League affiliate in Fayetteville, N.C. Ryan Hoover,
Detroit's director of player development, is also with them.

international scouts used by the United States Olympic team to help them
prepare for the World Championships next year and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing
. . . . The Pistons have been assessed at least one technical foul in each of
the last seven games.
