His inclusion had been known for weeks, if not months, but Sunday it became
official. If the USA is to return to worldwide dominance and win an Olympic
gold medal in 2008, it will be Pistons point guard Chauncey Billups running the
show.

Managing director Jerry Colangelo released the names of the 23 NBA and college
players picked to compose Team USA for the next three years. The obligations
start this summer with training camp, exhibition games and the squad's first
crack at international success in Japan at the world championships, which begin
in August.

to return the USA to dominance. And he fits the mold. He wasn't an NBA All-Star

The committee thought so much of Billups that he is one of only two players
excused from part of this summer's commitments. He and Milwaukee Bucks guard
Michael Redd will both attend training camp in July in Las Vegas but will skip
exhibition games in South Korea and China as well as August's world
championships.

, Piper, through the first few months. And the committee, despite a hard
three-year-commitment-or-bust line, said OK.

Colangelo said Billups' absence from this summer's events has no bearing on his
involvement or role with the team in the next two years. He also maintained
that although all 23 of the announced players make up Team USA today, that
could change.

This is a new door opening for Billups, who is a part of Team USA for the first
time.

His teammates, shooting guard Richard Hamilton and small forward Tayshaun
Prince, also received consideration for spots at the training camp. Prince
withdrew his name, and Hamilton turned down the invitation on the theory that
he'd rather save himself for chasing NBA titles.
