The Bobcats were inbounding the ball to start the fourth quarter.

A normally stress-free play suddenly turns into a panic for the Bobcats as
Lindsey Hunter darts into the fray, forcing Brevin Knight to throw a harried
and errant pass.

From the time Hunter entered the game late in the third quarter, to the time he
left early in the fourth, the Pistons had taken a one-point lead and extended

Indeed, it was the first time Hunter looked like, well, himself. After
rehabilitating his surgically repaired left ankle for the first four months of
the season, Hunter still is essentially in training-camp mode. And his progress
there has been slowed by flu-like symptoms, food poisoning and, most recently,
an exposed nerve in a cracked tooth.

"I don't know," Hunter said when he was asked if he believed Saunders
understood what he can bring to a team.

While Hunter convalesced, the Pistons brought in free agent Tony Delk, who,
like Hunter, can back up both guard spots. The question going forward is, will

James-Hunter combination from 2004 -- or will one be in the rotation and the
other out?

Saunders has used Hunter and Delk together briefly and plans to do it more in
the final 17 games of the season.

"I see Lindsey playing six or seven minutes a half, putting great pressure on
the other team and being very disruptive," Saunders said. "I like what I saw

Hunter did, too.

Typically, Hunter's effectiveness is more pronounced in the playoffs.

as regular-season games and they tend to be lower-scoring defensive tests of
wills. All of which enhance Hunter's value.

If Ben Wallace is the five-star general of the Pistons defense, Hunter is his
captain.

"That's our leader right there (pointing toward Wallace), and defense is what
he stands for," Hunter said.

"We have to go into every game with that same mindset. The ball isn't always
going to go in for you, but our defense and our effort, those things we can
always control. That's how we win. We lock in and force our will on people."

He isn't ready to talk about it, but somewhere in the back of Hunter's mind is
the possibility this will be his last playoff run.

He's 35 and in the last year of his contract. He and his wife, Ivy, have
discussed the possibility of retirement the last couple of years.

"We'll see," he said.

"I am just going to keep working hard and try to keep myself positive and keep
