Scouts Inc.
Cleveland Offense: LeBron James cannot get into a stretch where he settles
for outside shots. James has to continue to drive to the basket and force the
Pistons to pick up fouls as they attempt to contest his layups.
The Cavaliers have success on the pick and roll when the screener rolls
toward the basket. The Pistons are late to defend the slashing screener
because the focus is still on James.
Lindsey Hunter is defending James more and will do so in Game 7. James has
the size advantage on Hunter and should look to post more, but Hunter works
like crazy trying to front the post.
Cleveland Defense: When Zydrunas Ilgauskas is in the game he totally ignores
Ben Wallace, Wallace is open behind the Cleveland interior defenders. Wallace
is ignored by his teammates on offense as well, but he is getting weakside
rebounds because of Ilgauskas rotating over on help defense.
When Anderson Varejao is defending Rasheed Wallace he has to continue to work
hard denying the entry passes. When this happens Wallace has to come out
further to make the catch and ends up in a face up game with Varejao which is
not as effective as his post game.
Detroit Offense: The Cavaliers have helped on almost all of the post plays
that Detroit runs for Rasheed Wallace and Tayshaun Prince, the Pistons are
slow reacting to the help and have not really tried to develop an
inside-outside game with Chauncey Billups as a shooter. The Pistons ran a
play in the fourth quarter where Eric Snow ended up defending Rasheed in the
paint after a switch, it is a great play and a huge advantage for the
Pistons. It would be great to see Detroit run off of misses and turnovers
more.
Detroit Defense: The Pistons defense has not been doubling and triple teaming
LeBron James as much the last two games. They are running him on a string
more, a defensive scheme where every Detroit player shades over to pick him
up after a screen. Hunter has done a good job of pestering James, but this is
not the optimal matchup over the course of an entire game.
Expect to see Detroit run some more 2-3 zone out of timeouts. It is effective
preventing dribble penetration and gets James to settle for outside jumpers.
Pick: Detroit in seven
