‧ Magic-Pistons series scouting report | Series page
Detroit has beaten Orlando every game they have played this season. That's
six wins total. They beat Orlando in Game 1 by eight points, despite 58
percent shooting from the Magic, thanks to 20 turnovers and 18 missed free
throws by Orlando.
In Game 2, Orlando reduced its missed free throws and turnovers by half, and
still lost by eight points.
Heading to Florida for Game 3, and facing a Detroit team that actually played
a little better this season on the road than at home, it does not appear that
Orlando coach Brian Hill has many options left. Still, his team has competed
extremely well thus far, and they can expect a wild crowd Thursday night, so
perhaps Orlando can find just a bit more magic to help them get back into the
series.
Nothing that Coach Hill has come up with, strategy wise, has helped get the
Magic over the hump. But he can experiment some with both his personnel and
his game plan to try and generate some energy. The Pistons have pounced on
Dwight Howard whenever he gets the ball in the post, playing in front and
behind and forcing him into tough shots and turnovers.
But they can't do that when Howard catches the ball early in transition in
front of the rim (post defense is at it's weakest in transition) or after
long rebounds when defenders are scattered. The Magic can really make an
effort to get the ball to Howard in those situations, and Howard must forget
about his free throw woes and just look to make power plays when he gets a
chance.
Carlos Arroyo has provided some energy in both games with his scoring and
passing ability, and he has a huge following in Orlando that will scream and
flag-wave whenever he does anything at home. Arroyo, a former Piston, might
be just the guy who gets hot in a quarter to give the Magic a breakout
quarter, one they have not yet had. Hill needs to continue to give the green
light to Hedo Turkoglu and Grant Hill, Orlando's most effective players by
far against the Pistons, but he can look more to Darko Milicic too. Darko has
been more productive than Tony Battie, and needs 30+ minutes Thursday night.
The Pistons are too talented and balanced for Orlando to stop them, but
better offensive production can at least put some pressure on Detroit in the
hopes that that pressure ends up effecting their shooting and overall
execution. Orlando can even try going small, playing Hedo at the 4 and
forcing a Detroit big to defend in space.
Detroit has coasted through both games, gaining a solid margin in the third
quarter and then hanging on late. With a loud crowd and and some Magic
players who can make big plays at home late, Detroit needs to play their best
game of the series to gain a 3-0 edge. Tayshaun Prince and Chauncey Billups
have been terrific and efficient, scoring and passing while using their size
to gain scoring advantages.
There is little Orlando can do to disrupt them due to the offensive balance
the Pistons have. Detroit must exhibit an aggressive defensive attitude
Thursday night, playing in the passing lanes and blitzing pick and rolls.
This can lead to turnovers while disrupting Orlando's offensive rhythm.
Prince and Rasheed Wallace both can hurt the Magic with their length and
timing as shot blockers (or alterers). Detroit's bigs must sprint back in
transition to keep Howard from getting those early touches and contest quick
shots by Orlando's wings. If the Pistons play defense with purpose and
energy, they likely will win Game 3; anything less and this series suddenly
gets a lot more interesting.
