Send the Pistons as Team USA? It was in the works; Billups: 'A great
compliment'

LAS VEGAS — Before Jerry Colangelo's current model, there was a more radical
plan floated by some frustrated Americans as a way to fix U.S. basketball.
Chauncey Billups heard it, and understood the logic.
The idea: Send the Detroit Pistons as the U.S. representative to
international basketball competitions.
"It's actually a great compliment," Billups said. "I think one of the main
reasons why is that, one, we play great defense as a team, and two, we're
already a cohesive unit.

"You're playing against a lot of teams that have played together for a lot of
time, for a long time and they know each other well. And I think a team like
Detroit or
San Antonio — even though they got a lot of non-Americans — they
know each other well. They play with that cohesiveness and that's probably
what that's all about."

The Americans have two Pistons on this team, with Billups and Tayshaun Prince
playing for a U.S. club that opened the second round of the FIBA Americas
tournament Monday night against Mexico.
"It's an honor for me and Chauncey to be here, two guys on the same team,"
said Prince, who sprained his left ankle against Brazil on Sunday and was
expected to miss at least one game.

The Pistons won the 2004 NBA title, fell a game short of repeating, and had
the league's best record in 2005-06, all while using the same starting five:
Billups, Prince, Richard Hamilton, Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace.
"The defensive presence that we present, I think that's the reason why they
say what they've been saying," Prince said, "because we bring a defensive
intensity to the game."

The idea would no longer work. Ben Wallace left after the '06 season to sign
with the rival Chicago Bulls, leaving Detroit without the defensive anchor of
those teams.
But
USA basketball tried to get him, Billups and Hamilton to play in the 2004
Olympics. Larry Brown coached that team and didn't particularly hide his
distaste for some of the players he was given. He might have liked his roster
better had he been successful in convincing some of his Detroit players to
join him in Athens.

"He tried to talk, I think, a couple of us into coming — late though,"
Billups said. "It was like in the last hours. It was late."
All three would have been replacements for players that had pulled out.
Wallace and Hamilton preferred to rest after the long season that ended with
Detroit's surprisingly easy victory over Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe Bryant and
the Los Angeles Lakers.
Billups may have considered the invitation, had it been extended sooner.
"It was really the way and the manner that they asked me," said Billups, the
MVP of the '04 finals. "They asked like 12, 14 other guards, and then they
couldn't get none of them, and they were like, 'How about Chauncey?'
"I felt that was a disrespect to me for what I've done, what I had been
through and what I had showed on the court and what I could do. So I said I
didn't really want to be a part of that. Obviously this time around it's a
lot different."
在當時美國隊先問過了12~14名後衛都被拒絕之後才找上槍蜥，所以槍蜥覺得他不受尊
重就不想參與了。但槍蜥說這次情況不一樣了。
Billups was chosen for Colangelo's national team program in 2006, but wasn't
a candidate to play in the world championships in Japan because he planned to
stay home with his wife, who was expecting a child. But with Colangelo saying
the Americans needed veteran leadership in the backcourt, the 30-year-old
Billups was a natural addition this year.
Prince also was asked if he'd be interested last year but was unavailable.
USA Basketball came back to him this year, seeing a need for his versatility
and winning background.
"I'm just so glad and so lucky that opportunity presented itself again this
time around," Prince said. "What I bring to the team obviously is some
defense and some rebounding, and also capable of hitting some outside shots.
"With this type of squad we have, obviously I don't have to score a lot or do
anything in that type of role."
Colangelo remembered also meeting with Ben Wallace, but the two mutually
agreed his game wasn't suited for international play. But he wouldn't give up
on Prince, even sending an intermediary to make sure if he asked again, he
would get a yes.

"They're deserving," Colangelo said. "Chauncey Billups is deserving. Tayshaun

小王子或許是個功能球員，但今天對上波多黎各的比賽他的上場時間只少於LBJ，Kobe和
Redd。另外在對上委內瑞拉時小王子的上場時間是全隊最高的24分鐘，對上維京群島時
也是全隊最高的19分鐘，對上加拿大時上場時間19分鐘是全隊第四。
