INDIANAPOLIS -- To the chagrin of those who filled up my e-mail inbox with
dreams of a lottery pick, the Pistons have clinched a playoff spot.
那些把我電子郵件信箱塞爆、幻想著活塞將參與角逐樂透籤的球迷們這下可要失望了，因為
活塞已經順利取得了最後一張季後賽門票。

While it's foolhardy to wish for a lottery pick on the slim chance that the
team gets a high-enough pick to nab an impact player, the reasoning is
understandable: Why make the playoffs when all the team has to look forward to
is becoming road kill after being run over by Cleveland, Boston or Orlando?

The Pistons can finish sixth, seventh or eighth in the Eastern Conference, so
they will play one of those three teams, which had a combined 182-55 record
going into Saturday night.

But the Pistons have a better chance against the East's Big Three than fans
might think.

I'm not saying they will advance to the second round. But of the possible
first-round matchups, I would only pick them to beat the Magic in a
best-of-seven series. The Pistons probably won't go quietly in any series, and
there are some factors that could bode well for them in the playoffs.

The Pistons have a 5-6 record against Cleveland, Boston and Orlando, although
that's inflated by their 3-0 record vs. the Magic. But all three are the type
of teams the Pistons have had success against this season -- teams with size.

That's because the Pistons are a big team with 6-foot-11 Rasheed Wallace, 6-11
Kwame Brown and frontcourt strongmen Antonio McDyess and Jason Maxiell.

Teams that can run and rely on dribble penetration have caused matchup problems
for the Pistons.

While Boston's Paul Pierce and Cleveland's LeBron James are major headaches,
the Pistons have shown an ability to limit both teams. Throw out a 21-point
loss at Cleveland on Feb. 22 and the Pistons have allowed just over 89 points
in seven games against the Cavs and Celtics. They are allowing 94.5 points per
game for the season.

And unlike the Celtics and Cavs, the Magic lacks a great one-on-one player,
enabling the Pistons to guard center Dwight Howard with a single player and
swarm outside threats Hedo Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis.

The Pistons have played well since a midseason eight-game losing streak and

Conference finals is going to be comfortable in the postseason.

 Emerging bench  板凳新能量

The bench could be a big factor in getting out of the first round. It was
telling how Pistons coach Michael Curry left Wallace and McDyess on the bench
in favor of Maxiell and Brown during Friday night's home victory against the
Nets in a must-win situation.
板凳球員將會是第一輪比賽能否順利過關的重要因素。當週五晚上主場迎戰籃網，那是場絕
對要拿下的重要比賽。而Curry決定將Rasheed與Dice留在板凳，反而將Maxiell與Brown留在
場上，隱約可以知道他的企圖。

Since Brown has started playing regularly, the Pistons have gotten the best of
most opponents on the boards because he takes up a lot of space down low. He
also had given the Pistons some offense. Maxiell consistently has provided
several explosive plays per game.
自從Kwame獲得穩定的上場時間後，活塞獲得了他在低位強大的籃板支援。他也讓活塞的進

Point guard Will Bynum gives Curry an option in the backcourt if starting point
guard Rodney Stuckey is struggling.

And with Allen Iverson's departure due to a bad back, the playing rotation has
been solidified, and the consistency seems to have helped the team.

The Pistons might be at their best right now.

Kevin Garnett's health might be the most important factor if the Pistons draw
the Celtics in the first round. The superstar has played only four games since
straining his right knee Feb. 19 and hasn't played in a game since March 25.
若第一輪的對手會遇上超塞，KG的健康會是這系列戰決定勝負最重要的因素。這位超級巨星
自從2/19扭傷右膝後只打了4場比賽，從3/25以後沒有再上場過。

The Celtics appear to be on cruise control, moving close to clinching the No. 2
seed -- they have won nine of 10. But without K.G., the Celtics are not
contenders, just pretenders.
超塞近期狀況也不錯，應該會是第二種子 -- 近十場比賽他們拿下了九場。但沒有了KG，超
塞頂多算是顗覦者稱不上是競爭者。

He is expected back for the regular-season finale, but will K.G. be truly
right? I would give the Pistons the nod in the frontcourt matchup if Garnett
isn't himself.

Whatever happens, the Pistons should make things interesting in the first
round. A seventh consecutive trip to the conference finals remains unlikely,
but don't be shocked if the Pistons hit a hot streak at just the right time.

"We've shown we are capable against all the teams," Curry said. "You really
lock into the teams and I think our guys can really lock in."
