OK ... just back from Joe D's presser ... He said the focus was on two
things, upgrading the talent base and taking high-character kids. I'm reading
between the lines a little here, but there were some whispers about Clark
having some character issues. That might have tipped the scales for them. He
also said he talked several times with Arnie Kander about Daye and Arnie was
confident he could get Daye on a program to add enough strength to make him a
functional player.
Austin Daye is talking to reporters right now ... I'll give you some
highlights ... He's talking about playing against stronger players. He says
he uses his abilities and turns it into something other than a physical
wrestling match. Says Prince was one of his favorite players when he was
growing up and will attach himself to Prince and learn from him. ... Says it
doesn't matter to him if he plays 3 or 4, wherever the Pistons want to play
him ... "whatever it takes to get on the floor" ...
More from Daye ... Damian James of Texas, Josh Heytvelt, Taj Gibson were
players who worked out with him on the day he came to see the Pistons. ...
He was very well-spoken, I'll give him that. Joe D said he was focused more
than ever on strong character in this draft. Daye sounds like he's got his
head on straight - very impressive for a 20-year old kid.
