Pistons Youth Movement Wants to Win

Disappointment isn't an emotion Detroit Pistons players and fans are used to
experiencing. But after an extremely dominant seven-year run the franchise
has endured two consecutive sub .500 seasons and missed the playoffs for the
first time since the 2001 campaign.

From 2001-08, the Pistons were the cream of the Eastern Conference amassing
an impressive 67 percent win rate, one NBA title, two NBA finals appearances
and four Eastern Conference final finishes.

Those were the good ole days and the present day Pistons face the enormous
challenge of moving up the vastly improved East power structure without the
talent and veteran leadership of players such as Rasheed Wallace and Chauncey
Billups who were mainstays during the team's early millennium success.

The 2010-11 Pistons will rely heavily on its core of youngsters and are
banking on the youth movement to contribute meaningful minutes this season.

HOOPSWORLD recently caught up with Detroit's most recent first-round picks,
Austin Daye and Greg Monroe, at the Las Vegas Summer League to discuss the
upcoming season, team chemistry and winning.

Daye, the No. 15 pick in the 2009 draft, like most rookies entering the
league struggled to find consistent minutes in the rotation. The 6-foot-11
Daye averaged 5.1 points and 2.5 rebounds in 13 minutes per outing as a
rookie, but will have to battle veteran small forward Tayshaun Prince to
secure a larger role in head coach John Kuester's lineup this year.

"You don't play basketball unless you want to play," Daye told HOOPSWORLD.
"I'm definitely a competitive person and I know he's (Prince) a great player
but I also want to be on the floor and produce as well. Training camp will be
fun. We're just two competitors and we'll battle each other and make each
other better."

Unseating Prince, a four-time All-Defensive second team selection, in the
starting lineup is a stretch at this point. However, Daye's development in
his sophomore season will likely determine the team's handling of Prince who
has one year left on his deal ($11 million) and will likely be the topic of
numerous trade rumors due to teams looking to acquire his expiring contract.

Daye possesses the same slender frame as Prince, but has noticeably bulked up
since the season ended.

"I only took two weeks off after the season. Getting back in the gym and the
weight room has helped my progression," stated Daye, averaging 21 points
through two summer league contests.

Daye also credits the Pistons front office for stockpiling a solid young core
that has helped team chemistry and he hopes the influx of young talent
translates into more victories.

"Joe Dumars (President of Basketball Operations) is a great trust of talent.
He definitely makes the right decisions. I think he's done a good job putting
us young guys together and having us mesh well," explained Daye.

Monroe, the No. 7 pick in this year's draft, is averaging 9.5 points, 6.5
rebounds and a surprising 3 steals through two summer league contests.

Unquestionably skilled, the knock on Monroe coming out of Georgetown was a
perceived lack of emotion and ability to dominate games consistently, even at
times when it was clear he was the most physically gifted athlete on the
court.

At the pro level, at least right away, Monroe won't have to worry about
dominating with scorers such as guards Richard Hamilton and Ben Gordon on the
roster. Monroe's biggest challenge will be finding his niche as a rookie.

"When you have five players going all out on the court you don't have to try
to do everything. Everything will come to you," Monroe explained to
HOOPSWORLD.

"I just need to continue to get better, more comfortable with the team,
rebound, defense, and score some points for my teammates and keep on making
plays," added Monroe.

The Pistons finished a woeful 27-55 this past season, but with an exciting
young nucleus consisting of 2009 second-round draft picks DaJuan Summers and
Jonas Jerebko, starting point guard Rodney Stuckey, Monroe, and Daye the
future is bright --- more wins are the goal.

"That's the plan. Winning more games. That's the main focus.  We're trying to
start that right now here in summer league," stated Monroe.

Daye has even bigger goals and that's helping the Pistons get back to the
postseason.

"I want playoffs more than you know. That's why I only took two weeks off. I
don't like losing. I didn't lose a lot at Gonzaga. It's just in my blood; I
don't like to lose at all. I'm very competitive. So hopefully we can get to
the playoffs and make a little noise in the east," stated Daye to HOOPSWORLD.
「我更想要季後賽。這也是我只休兩星期的原因。我不喜歡輸球。在崗大我也沒吞很多
場敗仗。我的血液就是這樣，一點也不想輸球。希望我們能打進季後賽，在東區製造些
驚奇。」Daye 說。

If the youngsters play on the court this season matches this summer's
confidence, there's no reason to believe that Detroit won't be in contention
for one of the lower seeds in the Eastern Conference.
如果年輕人在例行賽時也有這暑假的信心，那不是沒理由相信活塞可以爭取成為東區後
段種子。
