Source: Pistons won't use the NBA's amnesty clause
The Detroit Pistons won’t use the NBA’s amnesty clause to waive one of
their high-priced players before the season, a person with knowledge of the
situation said today.
The person requested anonymity because teams aren’t allowed to discuss the
league’s amnesty clause. The move is not surprising, despite three players
on the roster considered to be candidates for the new provision.
One option was shooting guard Rip Hamilton, who is on the books for roughly
$19 million over the next two seasons. The Pistons have almost traded
Hamilton several times, and all Pistons president of basketball operations
Joe Dumars needs is one contender to think Hamilton can help it win an NBA
title. If Hamilton, 33, is not moved before the season opener next month,
expect him to be in play at the trade deadline.
Next is shooting guard Ben Gordon, who has not lived up to expectations since
signing with the Pistons before the 2009-10 season. He is owed nearly $35
million over the next three seasons, so his trade value is low. There is a
thought that he could return to his high-scoring ways under new coach
Lawrence Frank.
And then there’s power forward Charlie Villanueva, who is under contract for
nearly $23 million over the next three seasons. Villanueva attracted interest
from teams last season, and his contract is not a cap wrecker.
There is not a big rush to invoke the provision that’s part of the
collective bargaining agreement because it can be used only once over the
life of the new CBA.
