it's really an outstanding shortstop that can be put
in the textbook.
but, the thing makes him outstanding is less
about his throwing. of course, i agree that
he has above-avarage ability to use his wrist.
instead, his legs (quick legs and stong knees) and his good sense of telling
the bounce of a ground ball are the keys to make him
to have such an excellent fielding ability.
look at the clip #1, without quick legs, he can't be even close
the ball; without strong and soft knees, he can't lower this body
like that while running. (somebody can catch the kind of ball
by not bending their knees instead by their long hands, but that's not
a good way. this is because for any infielders, they have to
lower their body to keep their eyes as close the same
elevation of the bouncing balls as possible.)
you can do an experiment. try to bend your knees while running, that's
much much difficult than you bend your knees without running.
by the way, for most aging players, they catch this kind of balls by
usng a sliding catch, because they want to lower their body but
their knees just can't afford.
for the second and third clips, to catch this kind of ball,
players need a good sense of telling bouncing height and distance of
a ground ball and quick legs more than a strong throwing.
to me, in the ball he catched behind the second base, that's
not too difficult. ball's bouncing is not difficult to judge
to let himself have a perfect position to catch the ball, so
all he needs is a pair of quick legs.
last point that i want to share is that for an infielder,
qucik release is more important than throwing a fastball by
using his whole body parts. of course, i know the time a player
throws a high speed ball can make up the time he wastes before
releasing the ball. but it is a nature rule that the hard
you throws a ball, the less accurate the ball goes to the target
he expects. in the case of infielfers, their targets are the
chest of the first basemen.
