In this lecture Prof Gray will consider the contemporary claim that liberal values are universal in scope and authority and dictate only one kind of regime as being everywhere legitimate. Against this claim, he will argue that liberal values express specific cultural traditions and can be embodied in a variety of different regimes--in other words, liberal universalism is a false doctrine. At the same time he will argue that unrestricted ethical relativism is also a false doctrine. There are universal human goods and evils, but they can and should be differently embodied in different historical contexts. The idea of a universal liberal regime should be abandoned, for legitimate regimes are eveywhere hybrids. Prof Gray will argue that the challenge for political theory is to show the diversity of regimes that can embody universal human values and how they can coexist in modus vivendi.
