There is some potential star power in the second base class, but there is not
yet a true standout along the lines of Jemile Weeks (Oakland Athletics, 1st
Round) in last year’s class. The two most likely candidates to go in the
front half of the first round are Scooter Gennett and LeVon Washington. In
addition to being advanced hitters, both Gennett and Washington have
potential game-changing tools with their power and speed, respectively. Both
could develop into superior second basemen. Outside of those two, we see a
decent group of well-rounded options, any of whom could bump their stock
considerably this upcoming Spring. At the collegiate level, Stidham could
open a lot of eyes if he’s able to build upon a solid 2008 campaign at the
plate. At the high school level, Hatton is a kid to watch. With potential
above-average power in his bat, and an aggressive approach to the game (both
offensively and defensively), Hatton has the potential to jump up this list
if he can build upon a solid showing at this year’s Area Code games:
