Special Topics in Sociological Theory: Social Capital

Synopsis of Course Content:
The course will explore (1) the theories of capital and theories of
social capital, (2) the empirical work on social capital, (3) linkages
between social capital and instrumental and expressive actions, (4) new
directions for theoretical and research extensions of the theory.
Reading Assignments:
Students are expected to read and report on original and synthetic
contributions in the literature throughout the course.

Presentations and Term Papers:
Students are expected to write a series of short papers throughout
the course and to write a term paper focusing on one theoretical
area with synthesis, critique, and proposed propositions. Grade will
be based on participation in class discussions, presentations of papers,
and mastery of literature and innovative ideas as reflected in the
term paper.
