Statistical Methods for the Social Sciences

Course Requirements:
Successful completion of the course depends on reading the texts and completing
the assigned homework problems. On occasion, you will be asked to turn in your h
omework for grading and review. Your performance in the course will be evaluated
on the basis of five homework assignments (total worth 40% of the final grade),
two examinations (each worth 20% of the final grade), and a brief research pape
r (20%).

Agresti, Alan, and Barbara Finlay, 1997, Statistical Methods for the Social Scie
nces, 3rd edition, Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall.
Andy Field, 2002, Discovering Statistics Using SPSS for Windows: Advanced Techni
ques for Beginners, Thousand Oaks, CA: SAGE Publications.
The book by Agresti and Finlay will serve as the primary text for this course; a
Chinese version is sold at local bookstores (社會統計學，鄭宗琳、吳宇真譯，2002
，五南圖書出版). Many students have found the text to be a useful reference sour
ce for subsequent classes and research. The book by Field will be reserved at li
brary.
Many data analysis packages are available and this semester we will use SPSS® w
hich is easily available at NTU and widely used in teaching and industry. Howeve
r, if you wish, you may use anything else but we cannot promise support. Some NT
U Computing Labs support S-PLUS®, SAS®, JMP®, EView®, and STATA®. MATLAB®
is also a possibility for those who want to do some programming.
