Man Killed by Train While Running After Dog

A man running after his dog near the train tracks in Del Mar
Friday was struck and killed by an oncoming train, officials from the
San Diego County Sheriff's Department confirmed.
聖地牙哥郡警方表示，星期五時，Del Mar 一名男子在鐵軌附近追他的狗時
，被經過當地的火車〔註：美鐵Pacific Surfliner #583，聖地牙哥往洛杉磯〕

According to San Diego County Sheriff's Department and Del Mar
fire officials, the tragic incident happened around 3:20 p.m. in the
100-block of 11th Street.
根據聖地牙哥郡警方和Del Mar 消防部門的消息，這起悲劇發生在下午 3點
20分左右，地點在Del Mar 11街 100街區一帶。
Officials said the man was walking his unleashed dog on the bluffs
near the train tracks when a northbound Amtrak train approached the
area and sounded its horn. Investigators believe the horn spooked the
dog and the dog darted across the tracks, with the owner running after
the pet.
官員表示，事發時男子在鐵軌旁的沙丘上遛狗但未繫狗鍊。調查人員相信火
車接近時的汽笛聲嚇到了狗，使狗衝向鐵軌，狗主人便追著他的寵物。
The train hit the man, killing him on impact.

Witnesses told officials it appeared the man ran after his dog in
an effort to prevent the dog from going in front of the train.
目擊者向官員表示這名男子盡力追著他的狗，避免狗從火車前方跑過。
Emergency crews confirmed the man's death at the scene. Officials
said it appears the man wasn't struck head-on by the train and may
have been trying to get out of the way when he was fatally hit.

面撞擊，且他可能試圖在撞擊時逃離現場。
Officials said the dog survived.

The incident is under investigation. Officials blocked off the
tracks overlooking the ocean as they worked to collect evidence from
the scene.

According to an update posted to the North County Transit
District's (NCTD) Twitter feed immediately following the accident,
COASTER service will likely experience delays throughout the evening
due to the incident involving Amtrak 583. The NCTD said it would send
buses to Solana Beach and Sorrento Valley to pick up commuters.
依據NCTD在事故發生後於推特上發佈的訊息，COASTER 通勤列車直到晚上可
能都會受美鐵#583事故的影響。NCTD並將派出公車到Solana Beach和Sorrento
Valley兩站接駁通勤客。
A train passenger told NBC 7 he expected to be stuck on the train
for at least two hours due to the fatal incident.
〔美鐵〕火車上乘客告訴NBC 7 ，他認為這起事故將使火車延誤至少兩小時。
At 4:30 p.m., the NCTD tweeted that the investigation had been
completed and the bus bridge had been canceled, though COASTER
passengers could still expect some delays.

取消公車接駁；但COASTER 乘客仍可能遇到列車延誤。
The victim's name was not released. Witnesses said the man is
local to Del Mar and walks his dog often in the area.

The dog (pictured below) was being cared for by officials at the
scene and appeared unharmed. No one else was injured in the collision,
though officials did say the conductor of the train was extremely
shaken up by the accident.
這隻狗事發後被官員照顧〔註：其他新聞表示已交還罹難者家屬〕，這起事
故並未造成其他人受傷，但官員說列車車長受到極大的驚嚇。

加州聖地牙哥市區往北到郡界的鐵路為NCTD所有，這段鐵路除了NCTD自家的往返
Oceanside （聖地牙哥市中心北方約60公里）和聖地牙哥市中心的COASTER 通勤
列車外，還有Amtrak Pacific Surfliner和BNSF的貨車行駛（這段鐵路原本是
BNSF的），故這場事故也連帶使COASTER 通勤列車受到影響。鐵路在Del Mar 一
帶在沙丘上通過，西側有一條小徑，常有民眾在此休閒，再往西爬下沙丘後便到
海灘，另外Del Mar 的市街在鐵路東側。因鐵路兩旁並無柵欄，常有民眾直接穿
越鐵路往來住家和沙灘。

依新聞中的影片，出事的這列並不是Pacific Surfliner 常用的專用雙層車廂（
或專用車廂與Superliner混編），而是Amfleet / Horizon 客車混編。聖地牙哥
＝洛杉磯這段的Pacific Surfliner 原則上車頭在聖地牙哥側（南方），往洛杉
磯時由車頭推進行駛。若使用專用車廂時，北端是有駕駛設備的駕駛行李客車；
但若是Amfleet / Horizon 客車混編時，北端則是掛駕駛行李車（沒客室），所
以新聞影片中的機車頭是亮尾燈。
