Texas homecoming
Vernon Wells wells feels right at home in Texas. He grew up in Arlington and
often visited the old Arlington Stadium, where the Rangers used to play,
The Toronto Globe and Mail reported May 7. He was a frequent visitor in the
A's clubhouse when Oakland was in town because his father, a former football
player and now a sports artist, knew some of the Oakland players, including
Dave Stewart, Dave Henderson and Rickey Henderson. Before the May 6 game,
Wells recalled the time that Stewart came to watch him
play in a Little League game. The 11-year-old Wells hit two home runs that
day, the newspaper reported. "He was one of the guys I would always come up
and talk to when I was in the clubhouse," Wells told The Globe and Mail. "He
was the first athlete I really got to know."
