Rangers catching prospect Tomas Telis, who made his U.S. debut last year at
the age of 17, is expected to miss all of 2010 after undergoing Tommy John
surgery on his right elbow.
General manager Jon Daniels said Telis, ranked No. 26 among the Rangers
prospects by Baseball America magazine, recently had the surgery and is
expected to miss the full year.
Telis signed for $130,000 in 2007 as a shortstop, but was quickly converted
to catcher because of a stocky build. As a switch-hitter, he hit .322 in the
Arizona League last year.
While Telis has a long way to go in his transition to catching, he is
considered the second-best catching prospect in the organization behind Max
Ramirez.
