Just four days after acquiring catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli from the Angels
, the Blue Jays completed a trade on Tuesday to send him to the Rangers in excha
nge for right-handed reliever Frank Francisco and cash.
Napoli, who hit a career-high 26 homers and batted .238 last season for the Ange
ls, had played his entire career with the Angels before being sent to Toronto wi
th outfielder Juan Rivera for Vernon Wells. In addition to catching, the 29-year
-old Napoli also spent time last season at first base, where he could continue t
o see some playing time in Texas, along with occasional starts at designated hit
ter.
Napoli's has shown consistent power throughout his career, having hit no fewer t
han 20 homers a season for each of the past three years. Over five seasons in th
e Majors, Napoli owns a career average of .251.
Heading to Toronto, the 31-year-old Francisco gives the Blue Jays another proven
option in the back end of the bullpen. Last season, the right-hander owned a 3.
76 ERA, and also brings closing experience, having saved 25 games for the Ranger
s in 2009. In six seasons in the Majors, Francisco has recorded 32 saves and pos
ted a 3.75 ERA.
