ARLINGTON -- Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz will be sidelined for at least
three weeks with a Grade 1 strain of his left hamstring. General manager Jon
Daniels said the Rangers will likely call up outfielder Leonys Martin from
Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday.
"I expect we'll fill from within, with Leonys likely to get a look," Daniels
said. "As for how often he'll play, that's up to [manager Ron Washington],
and as we know, he'll play whoever gives us the best chance to win. We feel
Leonys has the ability to fill a role, but let's see how it plays out."
Martin, who was signed as an amateur free agent in May after his defection
from Cuba, is hitting .295 with four home runs and 42 RBI in 73 Minor League
games. He has 53 runs scored, 19 stolen bases, a .362 on-base percentage and
a .421 slugging percentage.
He will give the Rangers five outfielders, including four who are left-handed
hitters. The others are Josh Hamilton, David Murphy and Endy Chavez. Craig
Gentry is a right-handed hitter.
"He's talented, though not a finished product, and the time up here can only
help," Daniels said. "We're a little heavy on the left side in the outfield,
but those are our best guys at this point, so that's who we're going with."
