Marc Iavaroni out as Raptors assistant

The Raptors gained a player and lost a coach as the Summer of Change
continues.
On the day the Denver Nuggets didn’t match an offer sheet extended to
restricted free agent forward Linas Kleiza, assistant coach Marc Iavaroni is
leaving Jay Triano’s staff to join new head coach Vinny Del Negro with the
Los Angeles Clippers.
The news on Kleiza, who has a four-year, $18.8 million deal with the Raptors,
is hardly surprising; the Nuggets were never expected to match the offer.
But the departure of Iavaroni, hired a year ago as ostensibly Toronto’s
defensive guru, is mildly surprising.
Even after the addition of P.J. Carlesimo to Triano’s staff in May, there
were no other staff changes planned until the 53-year-old former head coach
of the Memphis Grizzlies decided to leave for Los Angeles.
Del Negro, the former head coach in Chicago, was hired to replace the fired
Mike Dunleavy and interim head coach Kim Hughes with the Clippers earlier
this month. In his time with the Bulls, Del Negro always had an older, more
experienced assistant like Del Harris or Bernie Bickerstaff on his staff.
Iavaroni’s tenure with Toronto hardly worked out as planned. The Raptors
were among the worst defensive teams in the NBA last season, allowing teams
to average 105.8 points against them, fourth worst in the NBA.
His departure leaves a staff of Carlesimo, Alex English and Micah Nori to
work with Triano. Alvin Williams and Eric Hughes remain as assistant coaches
for basketball development.
Iavaroni had worked as an assistant in Miami, Cleveland and Phoenix before
getting the head coaching job in Memphis in 2007. He lasted 39 games into the
2008-09 season before being fired by the Grizzlies.
In his five seasons with the Suns, he was the lead assistant on a staff that
produced one of the most powerful offences in NBA history.
There was no word on whether Iavaroni will be replaced in Toronto.
The Raptors, meanwhile, finished a perfect 5-0 run in the Las Vegas Summer
League on Saturday, beating the New Orleans Hornets 101-93 behind 24 points
from Ronald Dupree.
Both DeMar DeRozan and Sonny Weems had family obligations and missed the
final game of the summer league season.
