Exclusive: Michel Platini Questions Real Madrid Transfer Policy
The UEFA supremo has spoken exclusively to Goal.com about Los Merengues’
lavish project this summer…
Michel Platini was back in his hometown of Joeuf as the city celebrated its
100-year anniversary with a friendly between his two beloved clubs, AS Nancy
and Juventus.
Following the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, the French legend spoke
exclusively to Goal.com France correspondent Arnaud Demmerle as he reopened
the subject of Real Madrid’s romp in the transfer market.
“I am concerned by the inflation [in transfers] and it upsets me,” he said.
“I do not understand such policies at certain clubs. I find it hard to accept
the idea that some people are ready to spend without counting, when they don't
have the money to do so.
“Obviously, I’m referring to Real Madrid. But it doesn’t bother me if a club
spend €40 million on a player as long as they have the funds.”
Platini then went on to talk about other serious on-field matters, including
refereeing controversies and the '6+5' plan.
“When it comes to video refereeing, the problem is not technical but simply
human,” he explained.
“To get out of this rut, we need more referees… not more cameras. As for the
6+5 project, we are currently working with the EU. But the plan is on track.”
Finally, in sharp contrast to the current atmosphere in Madrid, the former
Les Bleus captain gave a glimpse of his humble beginnings in football.
He said, “I spent 11 years with AS Joeuf [youth team] until I was 17, working
with people such as my father, Aldo. It changed our lives, it gave us a goal,
an ideal, and a way of living thanks to football.
“At that time, there wasn’t anything else except football. There was little
to no television, and there certainly wasn’t any internet.”
