Former Real Madrid defender Ivan Helguera has claimed that the
signings of Mesut Oezil and Ricardo Carvalho were not needed,
and has added that he is unsure as to how they will fit into the
starting line-up in the 2010-11 season.
Helguera, who made over 200 appearances for Los Blancos during an
eight-year period at the Santiago Bernabeu, was discussing the club’s
transfer policy in an interview with website Defensa Central.
He stated that although he was more than aware of the quality of both
players, he was unsure how they would be utilised by coach Jose Mourinho.
Helguera commented: “Oezil had a good World Cup, but I do not know
if he will fit in at Madrid. You cannot sign a midfielder every year,
like Kaka, [Sergio] Canales, [Rafael] van der Vaart, there are too many.
“I don’t think that Ricardo Carvalho needs to be a Real Madrid player now.”
The 35-year-old, who resides in Valencia after retiring from the game in 2009,
also added that he believed that Mourinho is building a team to win the
Primera Division title.
