Just before the All-Star break, the Red Sox were in Tampa Bay when skipper
Terry Francona made the rounds during batting practice, as he often does.
Francona wandered over toward shortstop, where Beckett was standing, and the
two had a conversation that went something like this:
Francona: How ya' doin', Josh?
Beckett: Pretty good, skip.
Francona: Hey, let me ask you a question.
Beckett: Fire away.
Francona: Do you want to stay here?
Beckett: Whaddaya mean?
Francona: I mean do you want to re-sign with the Red Sox.
Beckett: Sure.
Francona: How much are you looking for?
Beckett: I don't know, maybe $10 million a year?
Armed with that knowledge, Francona strolled into the clubhouse following
batting practice and struck up a conversation with general manager Theo
Epstein. Francona essentially asked Epstein the same questions - namely, did
the Red Sox want to re-sign Beckett? - and then asked the all-important
question.
Francona: What do you think he's worth?
Epstein: Probably about $10 million a year.
Francona: The two of you should talk.
