ANAHEIM, Calif. - Manny Ramirez’ return to the Red Sox lineup last night was a
brief one and the team may now be without him for an extended period of time
due to a sore right knee.
Ramirez, who was restricted to a pinch-hitting appearance in Tuesday’s loss to
the Los Angeles Angels due to cramping in his right hamstring, asked to start
last night’s 5-4 win but came out after 3 1/2 innings due to the knee. Manager
Terry Francona, who speculated that the aching knee may be tied to the
hamstring issue, said the slugger will undergo a magnetic resonance imaging
test today. The knee has been bothering him for periods throughout the season.

Wake told to back off
Tim Wakefield’s comeback has been put on hold. The team’s medical staff
told the knuckleballer to stay off a bullpen mound until he no longer feels
discomfort with the stress fracture in his rib cage. Wakefield, who last
pitched on July 17, played catch on Monday and said he is still bothered by the
injury.
