BOSTON -- For a perspective on just how grim this August was for the Boston Red
 Sox, consider this: Being swept in five straight games by the Yankees at
Fenway Park was far from the worst thing that happened to them this month.
The month has been characterized not only by defeat, but by a flood of injuries
 and maladies, the latter potentially more serious than the usual afflictions
of ankles, knees, hamstrings, wrists, elbows and shoulders.

would be playing again as soon as Saturday, was somewhat premature.

American League East. Then they came upon this August that would be physically,
medically, competitively, historically bad. They went 9-21 in August, thus
tying a Major League record for most losses in a single month by a team that
entered that month leading a league or a division. Their 6-4 victory over Toronto
on Thursday night broke a six-game losing streak and spared them from breaking
the record.

Diego for a player to be named later. It was an impossible sign to miss; a team
that opened August as a postseason favorite closed the month looking toward
future seasons.

is more than coincidence that the August slide coincided with Varitek going on
the disabled list with a knee injury. He could not be replaced, either tangibly
or intangibly. The subsequent performance of Javy Lopez only served to
underscore how invaluable Varitek actually is.
