The Red Sox have hired former Padres hitting coach Dave Magadan, but it's
unclear what role he'll assume.
The hiring was confirmed by Magadan's agent Alan Nero, and by a Red Sox
official. But neither knew what Magadan's final role will be.
Magadan was fired as San Diego Padres hitting coach on July 15 when the Padres
were struggling offensively with a .253 average. He was replaced by Merv
Rettenmund.
Magadan was known for his plate discipline as a player. He was originally
drafted by the Red Sox in the 12th round of the June draft in 1980, but didn't
sign. He had a great college career at University of Alabama and was named
Baseball America's college player of the year in 1983.
He was drafted by the Mets in June, 1983 as the 32nd player taken overall. He
had his best season in 1990 when he hit .328 and had a .417 on base percentage
for the Mets.
Sox general manager Theo Epstein knew Magadan from their time together in San
Diego. Magadan could also be used in a special assistant's role to Epstein.
Magadan is certainly qualified to be a hitting coach or to be a coach on Boston's
staff. The Sox fired hitting coach Ron Jackson after the season and have not
officially replaced him. Sox first base coach Bill Haselman is also
contemplating a shift to managing in the Sox organization which could open up
that job.
