NEW YORK – The Boston Red Sox have asked permission to talk to Eric Gagne and/or his representative, Scott Boras. It would appear that the Red Sox and Texas Rangers are at least close to a deal in principal. However, Gagne has been reluctant to leave the Rangers as anything but a closer, and the Red Sox are not among the teams Gagne agreed to be traded to when he signed with the Rangers last offseason.
