The sky’s the limit for Buchholz

PAWTUCKET — Before each inning, Pawtucket pitcher Clay Buchholz stands
behind the pitcher’s mound with his hands on his knees, takes a couple of
deep breaths and completely clears his head of distractions.
When he’s ready, it’s just him and the batter — nothing else.
“I’m clearing my mind of everything I might be thinking about,” he said.
“I was always told before you throw a pitch, everything has to be clear and
you have to focus on one thing, and that’s throwing the pitch and being
committed to it. I’m always thinking about what pitch I want to start the
batter off with, and I go from there. I can’t remember how long I’ve been
doing it, but I’ve been doing it for a while. It’s stuck with me and it
gets my mind ready.”
At first glance, Buchholz may not look like a major-league pitcher, with his
tall and lanky frame, but once anyone sees the ball explode out of his hand,
it’s clear he’s on the fast track to a successful career.
“Those are some very active levers,” said Pawtucket manager Ron Johnson.
Buchholz has four above-average pitches and has good command of all of them.
His fastball hits the radar gun in the low- to mid-90s. His curveball, slider
and changeup consistently keep the opposition off balance. He’s aggressive
on the mound and pounds the strike zone with authority.
“I like what I’ve seen,” said Pawtucket pitching coach Mike Griffin, a
former major-league pitcher. “He’s a very poised kid for his age at this
level. He’s shown me he’s confident in himself, and those are very good
attributes.”
Griffin likes the amount of swings and misses Buchholz gets with his
changeup, and the spin direction and depth he has on his big 12-to-6
curveball. His slider has good movement down, too.
“Right now, we’re just working on the consistency of the fastball,” said
Griffin. “He needs to tighten it up a little bit, and he’s shown a lot of
progress.”
There are plenty of highly touted pitching prospects in the minors this
season, including Buchholz, Rochester’s Kevin Slowey, who pitched against
Pawtucket last night, and Yankees farmhand Joba Chamberlain.
Chamberlain, 21, has pitched at all three minor-league levels during his
rookie season and is a combined 9-2 with a 2.45 ERA in 18 games (15 starts),
including 135 strikeouts and only 27 walks in 88 1/3 innings. The
right-hander was recently promoted to Triple-A Scranton and will likely be in
the majors before the end of this season.
As much as both American League and National League scouts like Buchholz,
some think Chamberlain, who consistently throws in the high 90s, has the
edge. The flip side to that, however, is most big-leaguers can hit a
fastball, but not everyone can hit an effective curveball.
Buchholz, who turns 23 next Tuesday, entered this season with an 11-5 record
and a 2.47 ERA, including 185 strikeouts and only 42 walks in 160 1/3 innings
in his first two pro seasons. The right-hander began this season with the
Portland Sea Dogs and dominated the Eastern League with a 7-2 record and a
1.77 ERA in 16 games. He struck out 116 batters and walked only 22 in 86 2/3
innings before he was promoted to Pawtucket at the All-Star break.
With the PawSox, he entered his fifth start last night with an 0-1 record and
a 3.93 ERA. But last night’s performance against Rochester was clearly his
strongest so far. He worked seven innings, allowing one run on four hits with
no walks and nine strikeouts, but had to settle for his fourth no-decision
this season.
“It’s piecing together real nice right now,” he said. “I’m working on
things on my days off and it’s paying off for me right now as far as my
fastball consistency, and I’m throwing strikes with my other pitches.”
A couple of American League scouts like what they see from Buchholz, but they
’re interested to see what he does when teams see him for a second time.
Minor-league managers and coaches never like to compare players or put any
expectations on young prospects, but Buchholz’s ceiling is obvious.
“It’s off the wall,” said Griffin. “The upside is so high. He has an
abundance of talen, with four major-league pitches, and those pitches will
have him playing at the major-league level. Right now, he just needs to get
his innings in at the highest minor-league level and learn how to use his
stuff a little bit more in certain situations.”
Johnson compared Buchholz to a young Catfish Hunter.
“I’m really impressed with him,” said Johnson. “If you’re going to get
him, you have to get him early. Obviously, he’s a different type pitcher
than the Fish; if he’s going to have any bumps in the road it’s going to be
early.”
Like most young pitchers in the Red Sox’ system, Buchholz is under close
scrutiny.
“There are a lot of guys who have come through this level this year with
high ceilings,” said Johnson. “But you don’t want to go and lose your head
about it because there’s enough pressure to learn to pitch and play, and
then go to Fenway Park and pitch and play there. So, as developers, we don’t
need to pile it on. Realistically, he does have a high ceiling.”
A pitcher’s routine is sacred.
Most tend to keep to themselves the day of a start, and Buchholz is no
different. Because he’s been so successful this season at both Double A and
Triple A, Griffin hasn’t tweaked a thing.
“Why?” asked Griffin. “Because he had so much success in Portland and he
was on a roll. He was in his routine, and when he got here I told him, ‘We
are not going to get out of that routine here. It’s going to stay the same.’
We haven’t touched it; it has remained the same. The only thing we’re
trying to do is trust his fastball, and we’re starting to work on his
command on both sides of the plate.”
