Pena wants to stay: Not looking for trade

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Josh Zeide wanted to make something perfectly clear -
contrary to a Globe report, his client, Wily Mo Pena, does not want to be
traded from the Red Sox.

“His preference would be to stay in Boston and to help the team win a
World Series this year,” said Zeide by phone yesterday, shortly after
communicating with Pena.

“Wily is certainly focused on helping his team win this year, really wants
to be a part of it, and has felt that way since the beginning of the season. It
’s just unfortunate that the situation had made that difficult for him to be
as productive as he would want to be because his situation isn’t what he was
expecting.”


While Pena clearly wants to play on a more regular basis, and would view
any potential deal in a positive light if it meant helping jump-start his
career, the 25-year-old has made it clear that he prefers to remain with the
Red Sox.

Doubts regarding Pena’s future will continue to swirl over the next few
days as Bobby Kielty plays for Triple-A Pawtucket on a contract that has an out
if he isn’t called up to the Sox within a week. It is believed Kielty would be
in line to fill Pena’s role as an outfield bat off the bench to be used
primarily against left-handed pitching.

Kielty’s first two games with the PawSox resulted in five strikeouts in
six at-bats during a doubleheader sweep by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.
