Mailbag: When will 'Tek hang 'em up?
Red Sox beat reporter Ian Browne answers fans' questions

How much longer do you see Jason Varitek playing? And do you think he will
retire a Red Sox?

你看隊長打球有多久了？你認為他會在襪子國內退休嗎？

Varitek will be 36 on April 11. However, he keeps himself in tremendous
shape. I could see him playing another three or four years, taking him up to
around the age of 40. Of all the players on the Red Sox, Varitek is the
hardest to imagine in another uniform. So that said, I think he will sign a
new deal with Boston and play there for the remainder of his career.

隊長在今年四月11號就滿36歲了。然而他仍然讓自己保持在一次三小時的狀態。
我認為他還可以再打個三年或四年直到他40歲。
在所有的襪子球員內，我最無法想像隊長穿上別隊的球衣。
這麼說好了，我認為他會簽下一紙新的合約留在襪子國內持續他的生涯直到退休。

I read that former right fielder Trot Nixon is working on his defense at
first base. Do you think the Red Sox should bring him back and provide some
pop off the bench, and give Kevin Youkilis a few more days of rest?

That's an interesting one. I guess part of it depends on how well Nixon has
adapted to a position he's never played. And you also wonder how willing the
former fan favorite would be to playing such a reduced role. Keep in mind
that Eric Hinske only had 186 at-bats in that role last year. That said, the
move would be extremely popular with the fans.

這是會讓人有興趣的一個觀點。我覺得很重要的一點在於水門總統對於他從未防守過的
位置的適應程度為何？還是你期望看到的是一個過去最被球迷所喜愛的人能夠重回到球
隊但是卻日漸衰退。還記得去年一位我不們記得的人在這位置只打了186個打數。這麼說

Do you believe Clay Buchholz deserves a spot in the rotation? If so, who
would he be replacing in the projected rotation?

I don't believe that any individual -- even one as talented as Buchholz --
should be handed a role. So I think that Buchholz would have to do a
tremendous job this spring to be one of the team's five starters come Opening
Day. He has four established starters in front of him in Josh Beckett, Curt
Schilling, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Tim Wakefield. Also, Jon Lester has more
Major League time than Buchholz and he'd probably be the slight favorite for
the fifth spot at this time. That said, I'm sure Buchholz will be heard from
this season.

我不相信有任何人--即便是如八扣子般有天分的--能夠被視為理所當然在輪值圈有個
位置。我認為八扣子應該要在春訓時候需要去證明自己有足夠能力留在開季之後的五

Would the Red Sox consider using David Ortiz as a backup first baseman more
often during the regular season? He's a pretty fair fielder and he could give
Youkilis some rest when needed; or, move Youkilis to third and have Ortiz at
first to give Mike Lowell some rest. Plus, with more activity in the field,
he might be able to push himself over the top to win the American League MVP
Award, which he has come only so close to winning as a designated hitter.

襪子應該要在正規賽季時把老爹視為候補一壘手嘛？他是一位比注音人好的防守者
而且這樣也可以讓光頭佬有更多休息機會。或者可以把光頭佬放到三壘老爹放一壘
給賣肉有休息機會。再者，有更多防守機會或許可以讓老爹有更多機會去得到美聯
MVP，他以DH身份去競爭時候總是差了那麼一丁點。

Nope. The Red Sox believe strongly in keeping Ortiz away from defense as much
as possible. His bat is way too valuable for the club to risk injury in the
field. Because Ortiz has such a big body, the more he can stay off his legs,
the better. Also, Ortiz is very happy to be a full-time DH.

你開我玩笑嘛？襪子們一定進他們所能讓老爹遠離防守。他的打擊對於襪子來說比
防守能夠讓大家更快的感到高潮！因為老爹的大棒是如此的巨大，所以讓他多休息
是比較好的。再者，老爹也喜歡以DH身份讓大家嚐嚐他的大傢伙。

With the Sox playing two games against the A's in Japan, will Terry Francona
only start the two pitchers he thinks that'll get the job done, or will
Matsuzaka be thrown in there just as a "hometown gem?"

Respectful of Matsuzaka's legacy in Japan, I'm sure the Red Sox will give him
every opportunity to pitch one of those two games. Also, Matsuzaka is the
borderline No. 2 starter on the team, so it's not as if Francona would be
giving up a competitive edge by having Dice-K start one of the games. The
only issue is the birth of Matsuzaka's second child, which is due around the
same time the Red Sox are going to be in Japan.

回頭來看看牛肉在日本留下的豐功偉蹟，我可以保證襪子們一定會讓他在這兩場中的
其中一場出賽。此外牛肉是隊上的二號先發，所以粉科南應該不會腦殘到不讓他在日
本出賽。唯一的問題是牛肉第二個小孩出生的日期，剛好和襪子們去日本比賽的時間
撞期。

Are there going to be any Manny Ramirez stories this offseason?

For perhaps the first time in Ramirez's time with the Red Sox, he has
complete happiness in Boston. Perhaps Ramirez has matured and realizes what a
great situation he is in with the Red Sox, where he is so beloved. Ramirez is
working out at the Athlete's Performance Institute in Arizona this winter and
is reportedly in tremendous shape.

或許這是第一次米粉頭在襪子國內是完完整整的歡喜！他也終於瞭解到他在襪子國內的
地位以及他在這裡有多被喜愛(XD)。米粉頭現在正在努力的吃班龍丸，他要讓他的大傢伙
保持銳利給大家嚐嚐！

Correction: You said the Red Sox have all of the members back from the
bullpen, but Eric Gagne isn't going to be back in Boston next year.

Guilty as charged. I did forget about Gagne. But he was basically a mopup man
for the team down the stretch, so it isn't as if a vital member of the 2007
'pen is gone

唉壓，我還真的忘了他了，真是不好意思阿。但是他一點都不重要不是嘛？
說到這，他到底是誰阿？
