安心把傷養好比較重要,北極你就好好休息吧! Back to the future http://0rz.tw/573ME Sox play it safe now for a healthy Beckett later By Tony Massarotti Monday, March 10, 2008 ERO BEACH, Fla. - The Red Sox already were prepared for the possibility Daisuke Matsuzaka would not be with them for the team’s season-opening series in Japan later this month. Now, they must prepare for the possibility Josh Beckett won’t be there, either. While manager Terry Francona yesterday expressed optimism after seeing Beckett at the team’s home clubhouse in Fort Myers, the manager acknowledged before yesterday’s 4-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers that the club won’t take any chances with its staff ace. The Red Sox have a history of being careful with their pitchers, especially, and the team is slated to depart for Japan in just nine days. The good news? According to Francona, the Sox have deemed Beckett’s injury “muscular” in nature, meaning the club has ruled out much bigger problems, like ruptured or herniated disks. “We’re not there yet,” Francona said when asked whether Beckett could be bumped from the Japan trip. “I will say this: That’s not the end all and be all. I said to (Beckett), ‘Just get better.’ That’s what we’re focused on.” Added the manager later: “We need him to be healthy all year. That’s why we did it last year with the avulsion.” Indeed, though he made 30 starts and pitched 200 innings last season, Beckett spent the final two weeks of May with an “avulsion,” or blister, on his pitching hand. In retrospect, Beckett and Sox officials believed the pitcher did not need to miss more than one start, but the club opted to err on the side of conservatism, a move that paid great dividends. Beckett subsequently finished the season as the only 20-game winner in baseball and went on to post a 4-0 record and 1.20 ERA in four sensational postseason starts. During that span, he was named Most Valuable Player of the American League Championship Series. During Beckett’s career, teams carrying him on their roster are a perfect 6-0 in postseason series. On Saturday, Beckett immediately called to Francona and catcher Jason Varitek after throwing his first warmup toss prior to a scheduled start against the Florida Marlins at City of Palms Park. After Beckett promptly left the field with discomfort in his lower back, Sox officials said they would have a better grasp of the pitcher’s condition by yesterday morning. Yesterday, Francona admitted Beckett had a series of tests that ruled out more significant problems. Sox officials and Beckett were all pleased at the pitcher ’s condition yesterday morning, Francona said. “I think we’re all surprised he was moving around the way he was,” Francona said. “I think he even was.” Still, depending on Beckett’s progress over the next several days, the Sox have more than just his pitching to consider. Prior to the Sox’ season-opening, two-game set against the Oakland A’s in Japan, the Sox must make the estimated 17-hour trip to Tokyo, which seems highly illogical for an athlete currently suffering from back spasms. Should Beckett remain behind, he would benefit from nearly an additional two weeks in Florida before joining the team for its first 2008 games in the United States, also against the A’s, in Oakland on April 1-2. Even before Beckett’s mishap, the Sox were uncertain about the availability of Matsuzaka for the season-opening series in Japan. Matsuzaka’s wife, Tomoyo, is due to deliver the couple’s second child later this month in Boston. Matsuzaka is planning to be with his wife for the child’s birth, but there is the possibility he could fly to Japan on his own and join the Sox in time to pitch. Prior to the recent developments, the Sox were planning to pitch Beckett and Matsuzaka in the team’s first four games of the season. In between the two-game sets against the A’s in Tokyo and Oakland, the Sox have only a three-game exhibition series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and two days off. The five-day gap between big league games would allow the club to use only the first two starters in the rotation.
