Report: Red Sox remain in mix for Halladay, Martinez, Gonzalez

The Boston Red Sox are
active in virtually all corners of the trade market,
actively exploring potential trades for
Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay, Indians
catcher Victor Martinez, Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and shortstop
help, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports.
According to the Fox report, the Sox and Toronto continue to be engaged in
trade discussions involving Haladay, although Boston is considered a long-shot
to obtain the most sought-after player on the trade market. The Jays reportedly
made a formal, multiple-prospect request to the Red Sox in recent days.
The Philadelphia Phillies are still considered strong candidates to get
Halladay, but ESPN's Jayson Stark reported Sunday morning that Toronto had
rejected the Phils' latest offer, which included four prospects, including
pitcher J.A. Happ. There were multiple reports that the Phillies were looking
at Indians pitcher Cliff Lee as an alternative route to bolster their rotation.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that Philadelphia scouted Lee's start Sunday
in Seattle.
The Texas Rangers were also reported to be talking to both the Blue Jays and
the Indians about Halladay and Lee, but the team's financial difficulties are
thought to be an obstacle to any deal, even though the Rangers are flush with
prospects.
The Red Sox are scouting Martinez closely and communicating regularly with
Indians general manager Mark Shapiro, according to Fox, but have also told
Cleveland that
they are unwilling to give up pitcher Clay Buchholz in order to
land Martinez.
In other news involving Martinez, the Dodgers strongly denied reports by
Rosenthal that they are in discussions involving a trade that would bring both
Martinez and Lee to Los Angeles.
The Sox have contacted San Diego about the availability of Gonzalez, but there
are big hurdles in the way of any trade for the All-Star slugger, according to
Buster Olney of ESPN the Magazine. Olney reports that the Padres would require
"an extraordinary package of prospects" in any deal for the 27-year-old
Gonzalez, who is signed to make only $4.75 million next year, with a
$5.5-million club option for 2011.
Gonzalez has a low .246 batting average but has ripped 25 home runs and carries
a .390 on-base percentage, aided by the fact that he is by far the biggest
threat in San Diego's weak lineup.
The A.L.-East leading Yankees remained quiet Sunday, although MLB.com reported
that they had scouts in attendance to watch Ian Snell pitch at Triple-A
Indianapolis. The 28-year-old Snell was a disaster this season for the Pirates
(2-8, 5.36 ERA), but he has shown promise earlier in his career, and the
Yankees are looking for a replacement for the injured Chien-Ming Wang.
