The Red Sox are paying to make Mike Lowell go away.

FOXSports.com reports Boston has agreed to trade Lowell to the Texas Rangers
for catcher Max Ramirez, and will eat most of the third baseman's $12 million
salary for 2010 to make it happen.

Lowell, 35, is entering the final year of his contract. He has been slowed by
hip and other injuries in recent seasons. He still was productive when he
played -- 17 home runs, 75 RBIs and a .337 on-base percentage in 119 games.

Those injuries, in fact, may prevent a deal from being finalized, a source
tells FOXSports.com.

Texas reportedly would use Lowell as a backup corner infielder and part-time
DH.

The move allows Boston to step up its pursuit of free-agent third baseman
Adrian Beltre.
