Ellsbury was a fairly miserable center fielder last year—he’s fast, but his
routes resemble a drunkard’s walk. In the smaller left field at Fenway, he
might be forced to take better paths to the ball. Cabrera is a solid if
unspectacular center fielder, and as with Damon, having to cover less ground
should mean that his positives get accentuated and his limitations get
minimized. Cabrera also has that terrific arm, which should mean a couple of
runners who might have gone second-to-home on a single to Damon would get
held up at third.
