Sox expected to send Kotchman to Mariners

On Monday, the Red Sox signed third baseman Adrian Beltre, who spent the past
five seasons in Seattle. Now they may be sending another corner infielder the
Mariners' way.

The Mariners are expected to receive first baseman Casey Kotchman from the
Red Sox in exchange for a minor leaguer, a major league role player, and
cash. It appears that part of the motivation for the Red Sox to make the deal
is to manage their payroll under the competitive balance tax.

The Beltre signing -- which will become official after he passes a physical
-- made Kotchman expendable, with Kevin Youkilis starting at first base
instead of third.

Kotchman, 26, was acquired from the Braves at the July 31 trading deadline in
exchange for Adam LaRoche. He hit .218 with one home run and seven runs
batted in 95 plate appearances and 39 games with the Red Sox.

Kotchman, a smooth fielder, batted .268 with seven home runs and 48 RBIs
between Boston and Seattle last season. He is a .269 lifetime hitter.
