A few other observations from today's visit to the rookie development program:
Yamaico Navarro is a beast. They list him at 170 pounds but I bet he's
195-200. If Jose Iglesias develops as hoped, Navarro's future could be as a
third baseman. Of course he would have to develop some more power.
Luis Exposito seems like a kid with a bright future, especially for a former
31st round pick out of a junior college. Player development director Mike
Hazen talked about him having the best right-handed raw power in the
organization.
Hazen said the Sox would have to plan carefully to make sure their young
catchers - Exposito, Tim Federowicz, Mark Wagner and Dusty Brown - all get
enough ABs and games behind the plate. The organization will be creative,
using the Arizona Fall League and winter ball to make sure everybody says on
their development course.
Che-Hsuan Lin would have played linebacker in high school if he grew up in
Walpole instead of Hualien, Taiwan. He's an impressive looking athlete. They
had the players pulling sleds with weights on them today and he was
effortlessly sprinting.
The Red Sox are being very consistent in saying that Casey Kelly will get
every opportunity to earn a spot in the Portland rotation out of spring
training.
