6:57 PM Sun, Apr 11, 2010 By Dan Barbarisi For a moment, it looked bad. Really bad. Jacoby Ellsbury and Adrian Beltre had just collided chasing down a foul ball in left field. As they tumbled, Beltre's knee had smashed Ellsbury in the ribs. Ellsbury lay face down for a few moments, and then lay down for two full minutes as trainers swarmed around him. For those few minutes, the situation appeared dire. But after preliminary X-Rays, it appears Ellsbury is fine -- suffering from bruised, but not broken, ribs. "He kneed me right in the ribs so that was the thing I was worried about is a broken rib or something like that. I'm sure there's quite a bit of swelling because it is tough to breathe but I think I'll be fine," Ellsbury said. Initially, the difficulty breathing had Ellsbury worried about broken bones or worse. But doctors said that was just swelling, putting pressure on the lungs. Pain at first, "yeah, it didn't feel too good initially. But we got the X-Rays, it was a little monitor, but it looked pretty positive." Think it was busted, "It was tough to breathe. I think there was a lot of swelling in there so it put pressure on my lungs, that's what they said. I think it will be fine." Ellsbury said he's taken hits like that before, playing football when he was younger. Now he's got to figure out if he can play Monday against the Twins; he'll decide with trainers in the morning. "I guess the thing is wake up tomorrow and see how I feel. As long as nothing is broke, I think ... I guess it's pain tolerance. I feel pretty good. I know it's going to be really sore tomorrow. I also hit my hip pretty good. I think I'll be alright," Ellsbury said. As he saw his new teammate lying on the ground, Beltre feared the worst. "I got him with my knee pretty good," Beltre said. "He was in a lot of pain. I got scared when I saw him lying down there. I didn't know what the outcome was going to be." In a situation like that, Beltre said, it's hard for either player to call the other one off. They're both running full bore, and can't see one another. "It's tough, because I'm going with my head down, and it's a ball that either him or myself are going to get there on time, so it's hard to call it. I'm always going to go and try to get it until somebody calls me. That ball was in the middle. He has to dive and I have to really push for it. It's a tough decision to call it or not call it," Beltre said. It was the second time today that Ellsbury had a communication issue with another player; in the first, he didn't call off shortstop Bill Hall on a pop fly, leading to Hall's having to try for the ball, and a run-scoring error. Ellsbury said that these are isolated incidents, not signs that he's having trouble adjusting to playing left field. "I feel good in left. That's not a problem," he said. http://soxblog.projo.com/2010/04/ellsbury-appear.html -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 120.105.88.127
