SAN FRANCISCO — And the injuries keep on coming.

Victor Martinez fractured a bone in his left thumb after being struck by a
foul tip by the Giants’ Andres Torres in the third inning. One inning
earlier, he took a foul ball off both the thumb and the toe by Pablo
Sandoval. Martinez will be examined tomorrow in Boston, but both he and
manager Terry Francona are hopeful that he won’t have to go on the disabled
list.

“It’s not a given that he goes on the DL,” Francona said. “It was
swelling, and he was having trouble getting it in his glove. But you can pad
it and things like that. It’s not a given that he’ll be OK either. We’ll
get him examined tomorrow and see where he’s at from there.”

Martinez is the third Red Sox player to go down with an injury this weekend.
Dustin Pedroia suffered a non-displaced fracture in his left foot Friday
night, and Clay Buchholz hyperextended his left knee yesterday.
